We do get to see how scammers operate because we admin a small social networking site. Scammers still think it’s to do with dating so they try to join and use the usual ploys such as proxy IPs to get past us.
How can you tell a proxy? It is not so easy most of the time. There was once a nice little tool to use but it vanished, so Google is your best bet. Firstly does the IP match any detail the person has given. If they are in UK then expect a UK number and if in US expect a similar state. Mobile phones are another difficulty, but again look for what you would expect. Search will sometimes show it is a proxy directly , but often it won’t. So it is a numbers game now. Around 90 odd links in search is fairly good and probably not a proxy. The proxy here – 107.181.166.142- has over 600 links and you can be confident the person is attempting to hide where they really are using a proxy. As we shall see the 41.206.12.45 IP used before is Nigeria so that’s where our scammer really is.
