Being in the military is a family tradition. My father was an 11B infantryman in the 82nd Airborne Division. He jumped out of perfectly good planes; I admired him very much. Unfortunately, he died when I was young. Most of my family, my uncles, my father, my grandfather, were in the army.
When I graduated from high school, I knew I wanted to go to college, but I also wanted to join the military. Joining 2-147 FA and the Army National Guard in 1986 was the perfect way to follow in my family’s footsteps while completing my education and doing the other things I wanted to do.
I started in 1986 as a Cannoneer 13B on the 8-inch howitzer, an archaic beast. Then we went to the M109A4 155mm howitzer, and about four years ago, we converted to the multi-launch rocket system, MLRS. It is good to have that change and work with increasingly advanced weapons systems. That certainly increases the chances of activation of the battalion, but if we are going to have to deploy, we want to contribute as much as we can to our mission.
The war in Iraq is necessary. We are proud to help bring justice and help liberate the Iraqi people. Iraq has populations so divergent with many conflicts and had a dictator who used weapons of mass destruction, not only in others but also in their own population. We have an important mission
